Snorkeling in Gosong Muaras, Berau District, East Kalimantan Province

It is true that Derawan Archipelago has numerous beautiful islands. The thing is it also consists of some “Karang Gosong” or shoals. That means they only appear during the low tide and feature mostly sand and coral flakes. One of them is located in the southeast of Kakaban Island, which is called Gosong Muaras and it is famous for its stunning underwater sea. No wonder, tourists choose it as one of the best spots for snorkeling. The location is also suitable to witness a school of dolphins and other beautiful sea creatures!

The Nuance
In terms of size, Gosong Muaras is considered small. As mentioned before, it consists of sand and coral flakes. No trees grow on it and it appears quite plain. That means tourists cannot do much on such small shoal. On the other hand, they can take advantage of its nautical beauty. Once they arrive at the shoal, they can start getting ready for snorkeling. The visibility is good and the water is warm. The thing is no instructor is available. For beginners, it is better to hire an instructor in Kakaban Island and come with him to Gosong Muaras.

Exploring Gosong Muaras
The main attraction in such shoal is the dolphins. They often appear in the morning and at noon, actually. However, the location is also famous for other species of fishes and corals. That means it is quite recommended for snorkeling. As a precaution, people should choose the right spot before getting in the water as some parts of the sea have a strong current. Not to mention they need to wear proper equipment and have a good stamina. It is true snorkeling is a fun activity, but it also requires much energy.

No facilities are available in Gosong Muaras, so tourists must have prepared everything beforehand. They can rent snorkel gears in Kakaban Island, actually. These include goggles, fins, snorkel, etc. As for the tip, the rent fee is cheaper during the weekday. It is also cheaper if tourists can bargain with the locals. The thing is they should only use the best equipment, as it provides the best safety and comfort. Apart from that, skills do matter when it comes to snorkeling. For beginners, it is better to get in the water with an instructor or an experienced friend.

Gosong Muaras is not as popular as other islands in Derawan Archipelago like Sangalaki, Kakaban, Maratua, etc. However, it becomes a perfect alternative for those who love snorkeling. They can meet dolphins and beautiful small fishes in the location. Not to mention the shoal has stunning landscape, on which tourists can conduct photography. Though, no trees and facilities are available in the location. That means they should apply sunblock cream to their skin in order to get burnt by the heat of the sun at noon. Carrying snacks and bottled water is also recommended, actually.
